With the vast amount of research that has been conducted in the Mind Body area over the last few years, one of the most interesting things to come out is the value of regular relaxation sessions.
This has been promoted for centuries, even millennia, in the Eastern world. In the late 50s, early 60s, it began to emerge as a useful application in the West.
Then Transcendental Meditation, and its use by such notables as the Beatles and other well-known groups and individuals, brought an unprecedented attention to the phenomenon. However, the attention in the general press was not always the the best as it was unsure of itself, and of what Meditation was about.
And when people are uncertain, unsure, or even feel a bit threatened by a different idea, they tend to retreat behind the fortification of ridicule, not always stated, but strongly implied, and all the more effective for that. As many of us know, suggestion is much stronger than a bald statement.
However, with the recent research into the science behind the effects of TM, Relaxation, Mindful Awareness, Meditation, we see the great advantages of this practice.
And it doesn’t mean you have to become a Swami, or a Guru, or lost to the world of practical reality.
But, as the means are simple, and the benefits abundant and beyond question, it only remains to affect a simple practice to start enjoying them.
As in all new practices, the secret is either to have a ready belief in what you’re doing, or be prepared to suspend your disbelief, at least.
Now that TM, Mindfulness, Meditation, are accepted as mainstream practices, it’s worth remembering that they can be learned, practised, and applied by anyone who wants to do it.
There are various ways of applying yourself to the practice of Mindful Awareness.
Quite a few people already do it without being aware of it; they become entranced by music, poetry, memories of life events, love, and any other way in which the human mind and emotions can be engaged in quiet peaceful existence.
That’s what Mindful Awareness, or Meditation, or TM is about.
Next post will introduce ways to start any of these skills..
